First responders work as subs for the day so teachers can go to the funeral of a coworker.
On August 24, 2016, police officers and firemen came together at the school district in Greenwood, Arkansas for one beautiful reason. They volunteered to be substitute teachers after learning that a beloved faculty member at the local middle school died.
That faculty member’s name was Jennifer Nelms. She died of complications on August 20th, 2016 after battling lupus for over two years. The loss took everybody by surprise.
Jennifer was described as one of the most positive and upbeat people you’ll ever get to meet. She was mother of two boys, sang at church, and was an avid supporter of the local fire and police departments.
When the departments heard about her death, they immediately offered their support. Realizing that many teachers will attend Jennifer’s funeral, they volunteered to work as substitutes for the day. It was a beautiful gesture that is now going viral on social media.
