Young woman befriends a 91-year-old senior citizen after learning that she’s very lonely.

One of the most difficult aspects of getting older is the loneliness it brings. According to the University of California in San Francisco, 18% of senior citizens live alone and over 43% report feeling lonely on a regular basis.

You might be asking yourself: why is this a big problem? Well, according to that same study, seniors who suffered from loneliness also had a 45% increase in risk of death. Furthermore, they also showed a much greater mental and physical decline when compared to social seniors.

While these statistics are undoubtedly sad, they’re also what make the following story special. As Facebook user, Gemma Louise Donhou, waited for the bus, she started a conversation with a 91-year-old woman who was feeling very lonely.

Gemma could have easily brushed off this lonely stranger but she decided not to. Instead, she decided to turn her into a friend.

“This is my new mate Edna 👩🏼👵🏻 I met her at the bus stop after work. We started talking and she told me how she was just going into town for something to do because she was lonely in the house by herself after her husband of 55 years had passed away. It broke my heart thinking of this cute little old lady all alone with no one to talk to so I asked for her number so I could come visit her for a cup of tea ☕️ she’s 91 and just took her first selfie.”
